BHRT in Perimenopause: What Every Busy Mom Needs to Know About Hormones and Health
Jun 03, 2026Whoa, so much talk now about hormone therapy!
For many of the moms I talk to they are quite confused by all of it. Some are doing it because they can, some think they should, but don’t know exactly why, others are saying ‘no way, not for me!’ You might find yourself right in the middle of all of this.
One thing I think we need to understand about BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) is that it is still a form of medical hormone treatment.
Many people are told that because it starts from plant sources like yam or soy, it's "natural." But once those compounds are processed and modified to match human hormones, they become pharmaceutical hormones prescribed to influence hormone levels in the body. I will say right now, that bioidentical hormones are soooo much better than synthetic hormones, but let’s keep going.
Now, because they are much closer to human hormones it doesn't automatically make BHRT good or bad necessarily.
In fact, for some women, BHRT can be absolutely life-changing.
I've seen women finally sleep again, have fewer hot flashes, feel more like themselves, and have the energy to start rebuilding their health.
But here's where I think we need a more complete conversation.
As busy women—and especially busy moms in perimenopause—we're often looking for the thing that's causing our symptoms.
The hormone.
The lab test.
The supplement.
The answer.
But what if part of the story is everything else our bodies have been trying to manage for years?
The stress.
The rushing.
The poor sleep.
The blood sugar roller coaster.
The constant demands of work, family, aging parents, activities, volunteering, and trying to keep all the balls in the air.
Because hormone symptoms are often influenced by much more than just estrogen and progesterone.
Things like:
- Chronically elevated cortisol
- Blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Chronic inflammation
- Poor sleep and circadian rhythm disruption
- Liver detoxification challenges
- Nervous system overload
- Mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced cellular energy production
All of these systems are connected.
And when they're struggling, hormone symptoms often become louder.
That's why my approach has always been lifestyle first and especially in perimenopause.
Not because I'm against BHRT.
Not because hormones don't matter.
But because whether you choose BHRT or not, the foundations still matter.
The body still needs:
- Stable blood sugar
- Restorative sleep
- Stress resilience
- Strength and movement
- A healthy gut and liver
- A regulated nervous system
- Nourishing nutrition
Hormones can absolutely be a valuable tool.
But I don't think we serve women well when we make it sound like hormones are the whole answer.
True hormone health is deeply connected to metabolic health.
It's connected to how you eat, how you move, how you sleep, how you manage stress, and how supported your body feels day to day.
For many busy moms, that's actually good news.
Because it means there are things you can do right now that can make a meaningful difference in how you feel—whether you choose BHRT, are considering it, or decide it's not the right fit for you.
The goal isn't just better hormone levels.
The goal is a healthier, more resilient body that can carry you through this next chapter feeling strong, capable, and vibrant.
